Published in Acupuncture Today February 2020 Vol 21, Issue 2 What do we think of when we hear the word ‘healing’? For many, the first conclusion is that healing means to get better, or to heal from a disease. But what if this belief and concept about healing isn’t the whole picture? If healing doesn’t just mean to get better, then what does it mean? And how can this help us help our patients?
Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines healing as: heal - transitive verb 1a: to make free from injury or disease : to make sound or whole // heal a wound B: to make well again : to restore to health // heal the sick 2a: to cause (an undesirable condition) to be overcome // MEND the troubles … had not been forgotten, but they had been healed — William Power b: to patch up or correct (a breach or division) // heal a breach between friends 3: to restore to original purity or integrity // healed of sin Our approach in healthcare focuses on the first 3-4 aspects of this definition - to heal a wound, the sick or overcome an undesirable situation. While it is important to help our patients find recovery from the ailments that bring them into our office, in some cases, this isn’t always possible. Chronic disease, terminal illness or life situations that are permanent are not so simply overcome in the sense that we can erase them from reality entirely. It’s in this case where we have to focus on the last definition of the world healing - to restore to original purity or integrity. And while the sample of being ‘healed of sin’ takes on a different tone, what I believe this definition to point to is simply: to return to our original intention.

Gorgeous skin is a quality that’s been envied for the ages; blemish free, invisible pores and a smooth complexion free of wrinkles, it’s something many people strive for and something a multi billion dollar industry was built from. I always remind my patients that beauty starts on the inside, and this is true of our spirit and heart as well as the health of our body. The first step to True beauty lies in loving and cherishing our bodies just as they are, and part of this self love can be the act of taking care of our bodies and our skin with nutrition, herbs, mindfulness and skincare routines that nourish us from the inside out. Getting Botox, fillers and cosmetic surgery can be drastic and dramatic treatments that might be great for some people, but not for everyone, especially someone who’s wanting to do things a bit more naturally.
In my acupuncture clinic in San Rafael, CA I see a number of women and men for Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments - it’s an amazing way to address the signs of aging naturally and safely. A cosmetic acupuncture treatment alone may help many patients see the results they desire, and truly works from the inside out, but some may need an extra boost or are more committed to making lasting changes and an herbal prescription and supplement protocol can be implemented. For others, cosmetic facial acupuncture may not be a possibility or even an interest, in which case being able to implement dietary, lifestyle and herbal changes are great steps in a holistic beauty regimen. These 7 herbs and supplements are some of my go-to products for great looking skin from the inside out, they help improve the integrity of the skin and it’s appearance through a variety of factors, perhaps one or two might be right for you! Looking our best can come with a high price tag in today’s society, we have tons of choices; from topical care infused with gold and diamonds, to medical treatments and surgery, holistic treatments and any one of thousands of facials, for some these are the Holy Grail of anti-aging skincare and looking great, but for others treatments fall short time and time again. I see this in my clinic in San Rafael, some patients respond very well to their Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture treatments whereas some might not see results or the results are too little. Some patients come in complaining that anything and everything they've tried hasn't worked, so helping my patients gauge whether the treatment will work for them is part of my intake process, so that I can help decode what might be going on that could hinder the results, it's why holistic skincare is so important!
The skin is the largest organ in our body, and as many are aware by now: what goes in and what’s going on in our body becomes our body, and this includes the skin. Anything from stress to digestion can have an effect on the appearance of our skin, and this also plays a role in why and how our skincare routines work, or don’t. Here are 5 common reasons your skincare isn’t producing a satisfying result, and what you can do to solve it! It's been a long time coming and I'm thrilled to announce that starting in 2020 I will be offering a 3 Day Workshop for licensed Acupuncturists to learn my method of integrative Cosmetic Acupuncture! The first course will be held at my alma mater The Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, CA the last weekend of January 2020. Details are still being worked out but the course is currently pending for 23 CA CEUs and will also be applied for NCCAOM units as well.
I'm looking forward to offering this course as I think it really bridges together what other courses are missing and takes on an approach that helps students understand the WHY of cosmetic acupuncture from a physiological perspective as well as a spiritual perspective. Over a decade of practicing this art has led me to some unique understandings of how and why it works and how to work with patients to get the best results possible. Please see more information on my website: integrativecosmeticacupuncture.com for upcoming course dates and more! For the first 2 weeks of June I will be going on a spiritual retreat to visit the medium healer John of God in Brazil. As part of my personal spiritual journey this trip has come up as a next step on my path. Last year I embarked on my first pilgrimage to Brazil and found the experience provocative, eye opening, mind bending and life changing, my decision to relocate Lion's Heart to Marin was a direct result of that trip. Part of my journey to Brazil is the opportunity to bring your healing requests as well, read on for more details on how to 'come along' on my trip!
John of God is a great spiritual healer of our time, although he does not call himself a healer. John of God works with God (however you see or view this concept), many saints, benevolent light beings and angels, often referred to as the 'entities of the Casa' to help people heal from various ailments. You can watch Oprah's experience with John of God if you're curious. (And no, I will not be volunteering for any physical procedures). I would like to offer you the awesome opportunity to participate in my journey to Brazil and to have this healing energy sent to you personally over the next year. At the Casa at John of God, they receive photographs of people who cannot come to Brazil and they will send healing energy to you remotely for one year. No matter what your religious background is, the light beings and angels that work with John of God will accept your request. There is no turning away those in need of healing. There are images of Buddha, Yogananda, Krisna, Jesus, and Catholic Saints and Angels on the walls of the Case of John of God, the idea is that the healing energy is universal and the love from Creator is non-conditional--not based on piety, worthiness, the past, religion, ethnicity, food preference, sexual orientation, or beliefs or non-beliefs. Your picture will be in a healing room with thousands of other pictures, at the Casa of John of God for one year. The healing energy will be sent during this year's time. Some people experience emotional healing, some ask to find their life purpose, others are healed from cancer, AIDs and various other illnesses or physical problems. If you would like your photo presented directly to the entity and receive herbs from the casa there is a $50 fee. Photos shown to the entity will be prescribed herbs (usually a 45 day regimen), while taking herbs you are not allowed to drink alcohol or eat spicy food / pepper. This is a deeper way to experience the healing of the casa, occasionally the entity may also mark your photo - indicating you have been requested to make the trip to Brazil. Not all people who provide healing requests are healed in physical and obvious ways, but somehow each person who chooses to write down a healing request, receives exactly what he or she needs. If you would like me to take your picture there, here is what you need to do: Have a recent photo of yourself, taken within the last 3 months. Printed on regular paper no photo paper. (1 person only in each photo) You are welcome to send pictures of your family and friends who want to have healing energy sent to them too. With their permission. Only one person in each photo. Write on the back of each picture the name, address (including country), date of birth (DD/MM/YYY) and up to 3 things you or the person in the photo would like help healing. Healing requests can be emotional, physical, mental and spiritual. Holding a strong intention for what you would like to receive can help the healing be stronger. I must receive all photos before May 25th. Mail your pictures to (or bring them to your next appointment): Kim Peirano 503 D St. Suite 1 San Rafael, CA 94901 Original publication in Acupuncture Today May 2018 issue. Life expectancy continues to increase among the World population and in the U.S., as such our desire for a good quality of life in those golden years is of utmost importance.1 A good quality of life isn’t measured by just being alive, it includes the ability to do normal day-to-day tasks, be free of pain, have nourishing, healthy relationships, and most importantly having a nourishing and healthy relationship with ourselves. The beauty industry is booming more than ever before, and with it the demand for anti-aging and youth enhancing products and treatments.2 Research continues to favor the effects of cosmetic acupuncture, showing noticeable, results after a short series of treatments.3-4 However, in most studies regarding cosmetic acupuncture the function of the full body acupuncture treatment and the importance of the Shen, and its effect on the face and appearance is often overlooked. A person who lacks their Shen showing through their eyes and face is often seen as looking dull, tired, or even unattractive. This property of beauty has no correlation with the physical structure of the face and is based solely in the person’s true self, or spirit, being expressed through the eyes and facial appearance.
Kim had the pleasure of being a guest on the CW show Bay Area Focus with Michelle Griego earlier in 2018. You can watch her segment below where she give us some great insight on natural anti-aging and a little information on permanent makeup! ![]() I'm looking forward to this coming Tuesday, April 10th as I'll be the keynote speaker at the monthly NEW of Marin group meeting! If you're a female identified business person in the Bay Area - especially Marin - feel free to join us for our dinner meeting and catch my presentation entitled 'Beauty in Being' where I will speak about what really contributes to TRUE beauty! I'll give you a hint - it has almost NOTHING to do with the state of your skin! We live in a world of constant pressure to be amazing and look amazing doing it, but with endless options for anti-aging skin care it can be truly overwhelming and for sometimes little effect. Cultivating TRUE beauty is where we harness our truth and divine self and let it show to the World! My presentation will also include a brief meditation where you will receive your next step on your inner healing journey to get to know your true self. How on Earth can these tiny needles actually make my wrinkles go away?
The beauty industry continues to boom and grow, there are topical creams, lotions and potions all the way to cutting edge cosmetic surgeries. Some treatments simply fail at being effective, while others may be effective but very costly and invasive, finding a more natural treatment that is actually effective can be a difficult task. Cosmetic acupuncture is a centuries old practice, used originally in ancient China as a treatment for royalty, it is continuing to be a sought after, safe and effective alternative treatment to more invasive anti-aging procedures. Cosmetic acupuncture is a multi-leveled treatment, aimed at treating the entire person in a holistic approach. Aging should be considered a chronic, whole body process, so when we are looking at how to slow down that process it is critical to look at the whole picture. Utilizing only a cream or serum will have limited effect if the person continues to smoke cigarettes, be perpetually dehydrated, or in a constant state of elevated stress for instance. What we do in our lives, our lifestyle in and of itself, has a dramatic effect on how we look, so it should be no surprise that much of the benefit of cosmetic acupuncture lies in its’ holistic approach. When we approach skin care and anti-aging skin care in particular, there are a few goals we need to keep in mind, a treatment that adheres to these goals helps us administer effective skin care that produces desired results, while also avoiding injury to the skin structure so that the effects can last without repercussions later on. |
